The Girl Who Heard Music Differently
On August 3, 1970, a little girl named Deidra Muriel Roper was born in Brooklyn, New York, and that little girl would grow up to become DJ Spinderella – the Universe's #1 DJ
Growing up as 1 of 5 children, she would occupy her time by repeatedly scrolling through her father's record collection – a ritual that planted the seeds of a lifelong passion.
By the time she was 14, she was already DJing in her neighborhood, developing her craft in the same Brooklyn streets that shaped so many other notable hip-hop legends before her.
Deidra's sophomore year of high school changed everything. A classmate approached her with a simple question: would she be interested in joining an all-female rap group?
Deidra was introduced to Salt-N-Pepa producer Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor just before the group was set to appear at the Westchester Music Festival in 1986.
The group's original DJ had missed rehearsals, and Deidra – sharp, skilled, and ready – stepped in. She was selected as the group's DJ, embodied the name Spinderella, and at just 16 years old, began a journey that would reshape the entire landscape of hip-hop.

Salt-N-Pepa Formation
DJ Spinderella, alongside Cheryl "Salt" James and Sandra "Pepa" Denton, formed Salt-N-Pepa and together cemented their legacy as one of the most influential acts in music history. The trio became the first female rap group to earn platinum certification, selling over 15 million albums and singles WORLDWIDE!
Craft Master
Even though she was known as "The Turntable Queen", Spinderella wasn't just behind the decks – she was in the booth contributing production to the group's acclaimed albums like Black Magic (1990) and Very Necessary (1993), two of the most commercially successful records in hip-hop history. Spinderella has collaborated with other artists across the genre, including Big Daddy Kane, where she appeared as a featured artist on the single "Very Special" from his 1993 album "Looks like a job for..." – which became Kane's only top 40 hit.

Grammy Win
Nearly 2 years after their 4th studio album, "Very Necessary," Salt-N-Pepa took home the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance for "None of Your Business," a milestone that cemented the group's place at the pinnacle of hip-hop.

Beyond the Turntables

Spinderella has never been one to slow down or slow up. In the years following her work with Salt-N-Pepa, she expanded her artistry into every corner of entertainment and culture. She has appeared in the VH1 Series "The Salt-N-Pepa Show (2008) and was featured in Ladies Night on BET Network (2019), a docuseries spotlighting women in hip-hop.
From 2003 to 2006, she co-hosted the BackSpin – a nationally syndicated weekly old school hip-hop radio show on KKBT 100.3 in Los Angeles – bringing classic hip-hop to a new generation of listeners.
Annually Hosted Events
As an entrepreneur and event producer, Spinderellas has curated 2 signature event series that have become cornerstones of her brand: Spinderella's Comedy Jam – bringing together the best in national stand-up comedy and LIVE DJ performances, and her annual DJ Spinderella's BOO Bash – a Halloween party celebration that has drawn thousands of fans year after year and has become one of the largest Halloween parties, featuring legendary collaborators including DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Quik, DougE., Fresh, Twista, and Paul Wall.
Community Impact
Spinderella has gladly dedicated a tremendous amount of her time to fostering a sense of community in as many places as possible. She has served as the spokesperson for the American Diabetes Association, partnered with Big Thought.org to teach the art of the turntable through the DJ Spinderella Academy, reaching over 250 young artists in a single week, and coordinated the "Music, Movies, and More" symposium at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
In November of 2020, she became an honorary member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., recognized for her ongoing education in mentoring youth and empowering women in music and media.

History Made | Legacy Still Being Written
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction
On November 8, 2025, during the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for Salt-N-Pepa at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, DJ Spinderella made history.
The group was introduced by the notable Missy Elliot – Deidra Roper became the first female DJ ever inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame
In early 2026, the trio's legacy was honored again and they were inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame – an honor reserved for pioneer whose influence continues to shape their industries for generations. NAACP President and CEO Demak Johnson called them trailblazers who "rewrote the rules and boldly claimed a space in genre that forever changed because of their voices, style, and undeniable talent."
40 Years & Still Spinning
Today, Deidra Roper is as driven and as present as ever. She continues to headline shows and festivals nationwide, produces her Comedy Jam and BOO Bash events, mentors young-female DJs, and is set to co-headline with Salt-N-Pepa on stage of 2026.
The Brooklyn girl who stepped up at 16 and changed what women in hip-hop were allowed to be – is still spinning, still setting the standard, still, undisputedly the Universe's #1 Female DJ.
